The Magdalene and the Christ – from The Gospel of Philip

…the companion of the [Christ] is Mary Magdalene. [The Christ] loved her more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her mouth. The rest of the disciples [were offended]. They said to him “Why do you love her more than all of us?” The Savior answered and said to them,”Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness.”

The above quote comes from the Gospel of Philip, part of the collection of gnostic texts found in Nag Hammadi Egypt in 1945. The Nag Hammadi Library was published in English in 1977. The texts are generally considered to date from the 3rd and 4th centuries. Some scholars think the Coptic texts are translated from Greek source texts dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries.
